Thermal Expansion

Thermal expansion is the tendency of matter to change in volume in response to a change in temperature.

This occurs because the thermal energy of the particles in the material cause them to move more rapidly, and hence take up more space.

The magnitude of the expansion is proportional to the increase in temperature, and depends on the material’s specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity.

Thermal expansion can cause problems in engineering and construction, where it can lead to cracks and structural failure.
