Surface Tension

Surface tension is the tendency of a liquid surface to resist distortion by an external force. This force is due to the attraction of the molecules in the liquid to one another.

The surface tension of a liquid can be measured using a capillary tube.

When a small amount of liquid is placed in the tube, the surface tension will cause the liquid to rise up the tube. The higher the surface tension of the liquid, the higher it will rise in the tube.
