Shareholders’ equity

Shares are the units of ownership in a corporation and are held by the shareholders.

Shareholders’ equity is the total value of the shareholders’ shares, minus any liabilities (such as loans) owed to them by the corporation.

This equity is important because it gives shareholders a share of the profits generated by the corporation and a guarantee that they will be paid if there is a bankruptcy or other financial failure.
