Refractive Index

The refractive index (n) of a material is the measure of how much the speed of light changes as it passes through the material. The higher the n value, the slower the light travels.

This is important because it allows materials to control the direction of light. For example, if you have a lens with a high n value, the light will be slowed down and bent more as it passes through the lens. This is what allows lenses to magnify images.
