Instrumental variables are a class of statistical models that allow for the manipulation of unobservable factors, or “instrumental variables,” in order to more accurately estimate the effect of an observed variable on a target outcome.
Instrumental variables can be thought of as “proxy” measures of the true underlying effects of the observed variable, and are often used in experiments in order to account for potential confounding factors.
