Incidence is a measure of the number of new cases of a disease in a population over a given period of time. Incidence can be used to track changes in the prevalence (number of people with the disease) over time, and to identify risk factors for acquiring or developing the disease.
Incidence can also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of public health interventions.
