Degrees of freedom (DOF) are a statistician’s way of expressing how much variation is present in a set of data.
It is calculated by taking the sum of squares of the differences between each observation and the mean value of that observation.
This number is then divided by the total number of observations. The smaller the number, the more freedom the observations have to vary.
