A cohort is a group of people who share a common experience within a defined period of time. In statistics, cohorts are often used to study the effects of different variables on different groups of people.
For example, a researcher might want to know whether smoking affects the health of different age groups differently. To answer this question, the researcher would compare the health of smokers and non-smokers within each age cohort.
